The obvious choice is to turn to surgery, yet going under the knife isn’t always the best option. For one thing, the back is the most complicated part of the body, and prodding and poking it can only make the situation worse. Sometimes, the savviest choice is to try and ease the pain without surgery. If you don’t to go under the knife, here are the options at your disposal.

Doctor’s prescribe a variety of drugs to combat back pain, from antidepressants to steroids depending on the case. The great thing about a pill is that it targets the nervous system and nerve receptors. Because the receptors are not as heightened, the pain is far less severe and this allows you more ease of movement. Of course, drugs have their limitations, and some people think they only paper over the cracks. However, if you are in pain, reducing it is your main priority. Whatever you do, don’t self-medicate. Instead, go to a doctor and get a prescription from a medical professional.

Exercises

It might sound a little contradictory to work out, but the right ones will strengthen the problem area. For example, lying on your back with both knees bent and bringing them to your chest is an excellent way to relieve tension. The same goes for a back flexion stretch, which is an identical exercise except that you bring your head forward to touch your knees. Again, ask a professional such as a physical therapist for a list of stretches to ensure you don’t do any unnecessary damage. Also, don’t go overboard as the key to stretching is a low-intensity workout.

Natural Remedies

Organic medicines and procedures have a stigma because they appear to be hoaxes. The truth is they do work. All you have to do is choose the ones which are effective, like drinking green tea or soaking in warm water. Green tea contains a variety of antioxidants which ease the muscles, while hot water soothes the muscles and the pain as a result. If drinking tea and taking a bath doesn’t appeal, there is always acupuncture. This is the process of placing needles in the area of the back where the pain exists to relieve the tension. It is non-invasive and almost 100% safe.

Massage

If the thought of sticking needles in your back doesn’t appeal, you can lie down and have an expert massage it instead. Quite simply, it is an excellent way to keep the muscles supple and prevent them from getting stiff. The more rigid they become, the less movement you will have. Plus, the pain will intensify because they will be a lack of blood flow.

In conclusion, there is no reason to go under the knife if you think it is too dangerous. As you can see, there are plenty of alternatives which are still effective and much safer.
