Taking care of yourself is important all year round, but even more so in winter with the rise of colds, flus and general bugs on the rise.

To ensure that you stay healthy during the colder months and avoid those pesky bugs as much as you can, then there are definitely some simple steps you can take that don’t involve locking yourself in your house and remaining in a state of hibernation until April.

Here are just a few of them to get you started on the right track so you can enjoy the things that this colder season has to offer.

Eat a breakfast each day:

I won’t lie, this is something I’ve not been the greatest at, and I just don’t seem to have any appetite in the morning for some reason, but I truly understand the importance of eating something – even if it’s just a bowl of cereal, a slice of avocado toast or a smoothie. Whenever I force myself to get into the habit of eating first thing, I soon notice that I have more energy throughout the day, eat healthier all round and start developing a better appetite, which is a big part of staying healthy at any time of year.

Get plenty of fresh air:

Just because it’s cold outside, and sometimes the conditions will be less than favourable, it’s still good to get out and enjoy the crisp fresh air that comes in the colder time of year. As long as you keep yourself wrapped up warm, then there are likely to be plenty of outdoor things going on to keep you entertained – even if it’s just a walk in the park each day, it will help keep your energy levels up, boost your mood and your immune system. Plus, then when you do go home and snuggle up on the couch with a nice cup of hot chocolate, you’ll appreciate the luxury of it so much more.

Stop smoking:

While many people will wait until January 1 to set their yearly resolution of stopping smoking, you can get a head start and do it now. Smoking is never good for your health at any time of the year, but in winter your immune system is at higher risk of being weakened, making you more likely to get whatever bug is currently in the air, so if you ever needed an excuse to quit, then I think that’s a pretty good one – not that an excuse if ever actually required when it comes to putting your health first. If you know that you won’t be able to just quit smoking, then maybe switching to nicolites e-cigarettes for a while would be a good alternative. E-cigarettes contain none of the harmful chemicals that normal ones do, but they have proven effective in helping people kick the habit for good by enabling them to wean off slowly.

Make time for self-care:

Looking after yourself is not selfish, yet many of us seem to have developed this idea that if we’re not constantly on the go and doing everything for everyone else, then we’re somehow self absorbed and only care about ourselves. This is simply not true, and is actually a very dangerous mindset to operate with. In order for you to be at your best, and to look after others when needed, then you need to be taking care of you and making yourself a priority. You know that announcement that comes on when you’re waiting to take off on a flight that says in case of an emergency, you should fit your own oxygen mask before assisting others – including children? That’s not the airlines encouraging child neglect, it’s simply common sense from knowing that if you’re lying unconscious next to a child who needs you, you’re not going to be able to help them. Self-care doesn’t have to be disappearing to Bali for 3 weeks on a yoga retreat, although that does sound great, but it can simply be taking an hour for yourself to read a good book, go for a nice lunch, or indulge in a relaxing bubble bath.
